Turns out that our esteemed Federal Science Minister Gary Goodyear is finding himself juggling quite the political hot potato. Brief run-down of the story: he was asked by a reporter whether or not he believes in evolution and his response can be summed up as utter avoidance by playing the religion card. Now I’m all for freedom from religious persecution (I just wish that sometimes I was afforded the same freedom from those judgmental religious-types who pity my lack of absolute faith), but I just find it hard to swallow that our Federal SCIENCE Minister, whose job description requires him to formulate the nation’s scientific endeavors, may be someone who doesn’t accept one of the basic tenets of modern biology.
I know that I’m probably making too big a deal out of this just by posting about this issue, but these things tend to start somewhere small and can serve as strong indicators for a gradual shift in overall public policy. I have never been fully comfortable with our “honourable” no-longer-Progressive-but-only-Conservative government and this is just another one of those warning signs.
The clock continues to tick.
